Census: web-based defect and bug tracking

What's New in Census 5.0

Web-based client
The client program used to submit and track issues is now 100% Web-based. The Windows-based Census Client is no longer included in the distribution. All end-user features are now available in the Web views.

Integration of administration tools
All the administrative features from Census Client, such as the query, soft, layout, and report editors, are now part of Census Admin. And from Census Admin, you can now directly access both the Web View Editor and Census Web Admin.

New web-based workflow editor
Census Web Admin includes an easy-to-use editor for defining workflow rules. Workflow rules can determine the possible values for choice lists, or create dependent values, where changing the value of one field dynamically sets the values of other fields.

Extended Web-based administration capabilities
Through a Web browser, you can:

  • Manage user accounts and contacts (create new users, edit user information, add new contacts)
  • Edit choice lists (add new choices, change choice text, remove choices)
  • Define workflow rules
  • Add, remove, and reorder tabs

Improved mechanism for customizing Web views
You can now put customized files in a standard set of folders. Every time you regenerate a Web view, the customized files are copied to the output folder.

Improved setup and configuration
The Setup program is now based on Windows Installer (MSI). The Setup wizard automatically configures IIS, sets the required Web server permissions, and generates the default Web views.

The Web View Editor includes a simplified interface for managing the URLs and virtual directories of Web views.

In Census Admin, you can change the account used for anonymous access by all new Web views.

Improved Web view security
Control access to projects either at the project level or at the Web view level. You can use group permissions to control access to individual Web views. The Web View Editor now allows you to select the groups that can open a Web view.

Improved logon page for Web views
The logon page no longer includes a Project/View list, so users cannot see the projects or views they cannot access. Only after a user logs on is a list of the available Web views displayed.

Custom reports
Census now includes over 45 custom reports for bug tracking projects. Using Crystal Reports, you can build your own reports using the custom Census reports as templates.

Landscape reports
The Web-based report viewer now supports the Landscape orientation.

Timestamping
The default BugTrk project includes timestamping for the Detailed Description field (timestamping allows you to insert a "time stamp" every time you update the field). All new projects based on BugTrk inherit this feature.

Improved logons editor
The Logons Editor in Census Admin now displays the Project, Virtual Directory, and Application for each logged on user.
